Why it’s sometimes good for everybody….
By Brett Lloyd Abbott, MYM Austin Inc.
I’m going to dance on the edge of a dime here, and get dangerously close to a shameless, self-promoting e-mail update. If I’m successful, I will help a few, entertain more, and alienate none. If I fail, I may alienate some people, and lose credibility with my newsletter. We don’t want that.
Yes, this is high risk, but here’s why I think I can get away with this – You see, if you’re not swamped with all the business you can handle, then at some point you’re going to need to do something to promote your business. Run an ad in a newspaper. Go to a networking meeting. Put up a great big sign in front of your business. That’s called shameless self-promotion.
It’s shameless because you shouldn’t (and probably don’t) feel bad about it. After all, you provide a great service that you can be proud of, right? And you’re obviously promoting yourself, and not the guy down the street. So there you go: Shameless self-promotion.
By the way — if it weren’t for your shameless self-promotion, how would my neighbors and I ever know to hire you to build our pool? For that matter, if you’re a medical facility, and you don’t shamelessly promote yourself, how will I know to go to your facility when I cut my hand? I and millions of others like me are relying on the shameless self-promotion of pest control services, moving companies, plumbers and electricians and lots of other people, so that we can find them when we need them.
I think maybe the reason we all cringe at the thought of shameless self-promotion is because in an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to self-promote. Our reputation would be so strong that we would get all the business we could stand from our referrals, and maybe a few more from our website. That’s the goal, right?
This message is for those of you
who aren’t quite at that point.
Over the last few weeks and months, we’ve spent many longs hours breaking apart our “Full Service Marketing” program into smaller pieces that are easier for a business to swallow. It’s the same stuff we’ve been doing all along for all our clients, but now we’ve explained it and priced it so that you can invest in just one or two individual pieces, instead of the whole thing. – whatever you need.
And at long last, we’ve posted the prices and details of all those services on our website. So now, if you’re not quite sure how to shamelessly promote yourself, we can show you how. We don’t do pest control or plumbing services, but if you’re in the pool business, we can help you with any of these:
- Sales tools
- Automatic follow up systems
- DVD production
- Referral programs
- Search engine marketing
- Advertising and graphic design
- Discovering, uncovering and “telling your story”
Well, thank goodness for shameless self-promotion. Otherwise, if you were in need of emergency marketing services such as any of the above, you might not know where to turn. But now, thanks to my courage here, you now have at least one more option to consider.
I hope my bold move has encouraged you to not fear shameless self-promotion. It’s only natural, and if done right, almost unnoticeable.
Till next time,
PS – If you happen to visit our website, I would very much love to hear your comments, good, bad or otherwise. I’m also always interested in your feedback on my weekly newsletter.
